Foreign delegates gain a close look at grassroots livelihood, protection of people's rights
On Tuesday, 18 officials and human rights experts from eight countries, including Cuba, The Gambia and Cote d'Ivoire, visited the Dazhigu Food Market in Tianjin to gain a close look at grassroots livelihood and the protection of people's fundamental rights in China.
The clean and orderly environment and the warm, friendly atmosphere of the residents left a deep impression on the delegation. As one of Tianjin's earliest large-scale comprehensive agricultural markets, Dazhigu Food Market serves as a major venue for nearby residents to buy fresh produce and meet their daily consumption needs.
"Human rights are an important component of civilization. As an open space closely integrated into ordinary people's lives, markets are directly linked to people's basic rights concerning livelihood, social interaction and consumption," Youssouf Ismael Mmadi, a human rights delegate of the Ministry of Justice from the Comoros, said.
From 2005 to 2025, in response to urban development and people's livelihood needs, the market has completed five overall upgrades, providing more than 500 jobs and serving nearly 40,000 residents in six surrounding communities.
"Elderly residents often come here to rest and chat, while many young people drop by for lunch," Tang Jihong, a resident of Jintangcun community, said.
"Everything for daily life is readily available here, and I can quickly pick up whatever I need, which is incredibly convenient," she added. "With sound security and management, living nearby makes me feel truly content."
In recent years, technological advances have boosted the management and public service capacity of food markets across Tianjin, and with digital upgrades, stalls are now equipped with electronic screens displaying business information, food prices, customer flow, and more.
Dayron Valido Escalona, an expert in human rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, said that international human rights treaties and relevant instruments ensure everyone's right to adequate food and nutrition.
"There is a diverse selection of food at reasonable prices, easily affordable for all citizens, which effectively guarantees people's right to adequate food. It's a great initiative," Escalona added.
