DUBAI -- China's information and communications technology solutions provider Huawei on Monday launched its first Mideast logistics hub in Dubai's free port zone Jebel Ali, which will serve project deliveries across the region.

Peng Xiongji, Huawei's general manager for the United Arab Emirates, said in his speech at the launch ceremony that the center would initially focus on customers in the telecommunications sector.

The ceremony was attended by China's Consul General in Dubai Tang Weibin as well as over 200 members of the Dubai business community.

Peng said that the facility would shorten deliveries by around 30 days for ocean shipments and meet urgent delivery requests from regional customers.

He added in the first three years, the hub would serve Huawei's markets in the Gulf region as well as in the Middle East; after that, the firm planned to expand its radius to parts of Africa, such as Kenya and Tanzania.

The company has already announced plans to invest an additional $20 million or more in the facility's expansion over the next three years.

Huawei established its headquarters in the Middle East 10 years ago in Bahrain, according to the firm's website.

The Middle East is one of the fastest growing markets for Huawei, generating in 2012 2.083 billion dollars of revenues, an 18-percent increase year on year.
