China views the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons as the cornerstone of the international nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament regime and an indispensable pillar of the post-war international security architecture, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Monday.

Continued firm support for the treaty's purposes and objectives serves the interests of all parties, she added.

Mao made the remarks after the 11th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons concluded without adopting a final document.

She said the conference was held against a backdrop of severe disruption to the global strategic balance and stability, as well as the increasing politicization, polarization, and fragmentation of the multilateral arms control process. China regrets that the conference failed to reach consensus on an outcome document, Mao said.

Mao noted that the Chinese delegation participated constructively in all conference work in a spirit of unity and cooperation.

She called on all parties to genuinely uphold the concept of common security, strive to improve the international and regional security environment, effectively safeguard global strategic stability, eliminate the root causes of nuclear proliferation, create more favorable conditions, and advance the process of nuclear disarmament in an orderly manner.
