China hopes all parties will take a United Nations Security Council high-level meeting as an opportunity to revisit the noble goals enshrined in the UN Charter and build greater synergy for reforming and improving global governance, according to the Foreign Ministry.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi will chair a United Nations Security Council high-level meeting in New York on Tuesday, as China holds the council's rotating presidency for May, a move aimed at reaffirming commitment to multilateralism and revitalizing the role and standing of the United Nations, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Friday.

Guo said the upcoming meeting will focus on the contemporary relevance of the UN Charter, the need to uphold and act on its purposes and principles, and ways to strengthen the authority and effectiveness of the UN and its security council.

The meeting will be chaired by Wang and will be open to all UN member states, Guo said, adding that foreign ministers and senior representatives from a number of countries have confirmed their attendance. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will brief the meeting.

During his stay in New York, Wang will also attend a meeting of the Group of Friends of Global Governance on May 28 and meet with Guterres, as well as foreign ministers from other countries, the spokesman said.

China looks forward to working with all parties to further build consensus on reform, strengthen coordination and cooperation, effectively respond to global challenges, jointly safeguard the authority and status of the UN, and build a fairer and more equitable global governance system, Guo added.
