1 dead, 2 missing amid torrential downpour in Hunan
One person has been confirmed dead, while two others remain missing after torrential rain battered Shimen county in Hunan province, as of 7 pm on Monday.
The extreme downpour, which began on Sunday, exceeded historical rainfall records and posed high risks of flash floods and geological disasters, China Central Television reported on Monday. In response, the county government activated a Level II emergency response.
A total of 18,406 residents have been evacuated, and basic living supplies in the affected areas have been secured. Rescue efforts, including search operations and infrastructure repairs, are ongoing.
Authorities said they will continue to monitor the risks and ensure the well-being of those displaced. Residents are urged to stay alert to weather warnings and avoid rivers, steep slopes, and low-lying flood-prone areas.
