Jilin's hubs to modernize production
Industries centered on advanced manufacturing seen as growth drivers
Northeast China's Jilin province will accelerate the development of a modern industrial system centered on advanced manufacturing, highlighting the province's distinctive advantages, Governor Hu Yuting said on Thursday.
"Jilin is a major agricultural and industrial province, as well as a hub for science, education and culture," Hu said at a news conference on Jilin's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30). "Moreover, Jilin has significant comparative advantages in fields such as optoelectronic information, satellite manufacturing, new materials and healthcare."
The province is home to national-level research institutions and teams such as Jilin University and the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics.
"These institutions have advantages in fields like intelligent cerebellum, dexterous hands and polyetheretherketone, or PEEK, materials, with outstanding capabilities in high-end precision manufacturing," Hu said.
In the aerospace information sector, the Changguang Satellite Technology, based in Changchun, has led the industry in satellite manufacturing technology, offering low-cost, mass-production capabilities.
"The company has launched 152 Jilin-1 family satellites, making it the world's largest sub-meter-level commercial remote-sensing satellite constellation," Hu said.
"We will focus on promoting the integration of communication, navigation and remote sensing, harnessing vast amounts of data to drive the development of the digital economy and satellite internet," he added.
In 2025, Changguang developed and launched 24 satellites and sold 18, generating more than 1 billion yuan ($147 million) in revenue.
Its rapid development of aerospace data services has spurred the coordinated development of more than 1,000 upstream and downstream enterprises.
"After more than 20 years of dedicated effort, Changguang has achieved a qualitative leap," said Jia Hongguang, the company's deputy general manager. "As China's first full-industry-chain commercial remote-sensing satellite enterprise, we have established a complete commercial aerospace industry layout."
In the high-end optoelectronic chip sector, Gpixel Changchun Microelectronics Inc, a global leader in high-performance complementary metal-oxide semiconductor, or CMOS, image sensors, was officially listed on the main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on April 17, marking a critical milestone in the high-quality development of Changchun's optoelectronic industry.
Since its establishment in 2012, the company has launched more than 40 high-performance CMOS image sensor models across nine series, with chip production exceeding 600,000 units and sales surpassing 800 million yuan.
During the 15th Five-Year Plan period, the province will promote the transformation of the automotive industry toward intelligent connected new energy vehicles, with a strong emphasis on hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
Efforts will also be made to accelerate the transition to all-solid-state battery vehicles.
"FAW Group's all-solid-state battery vehicles have already been launched, effectively addressing the issue of reduced battery discharge efficiency in low-temperature conditions," Hu said.
Jilin will also promote the petrochemical industry's transition toward fine chemical new materials. "Ethylene, a key raw material for fine chemicals, for instance, is produced at a newly built 1.9 million-metric-ton ethylene project, with more than 40 supporting projects under construction," Hu said. "The next step is to extend the industrial chain, increase added value and create new advantages."
"The key to building a modern industrial system lies in developing new quality productive forces tailored to local conditions," he said. "We will focus on promoting the deep integration of technological innovation and industrial innovation, streamlining the path from technology to sample to commodity to industry, and reinforcing the role of enterprises as the mainstay of technological innovation."
Located at the world's golden latitude for ice and snow, Jilin boasts rare resources such as powder snow, calm winds, warm sunshine and hot springs.
During the past snow season, Jilin saw strong momentum in its ice and snow economy, with the number of detachable ropeways and ski visitors ranking first in the country.
Jin Yuhui, a member of the Jilin Provincial Government Party Leadership Group, said: "Next, we will continue to amplify the effects of the ice and snow economy and use the hosting of the 33rd Winter Universiade, which will be held in January 2027, as an opportunity to comprehensively shape and enhance new advantages in the ice and snow industry."
