300 hikers rescued after extreme weather on Mount Wutai
About 300 hikers have been rescued after sudden snow and strong winds left people stranded on Mount Wutai in northern China's Shanxi province, Xinzhou Daily, a local media outlet, reported on Monday afternoon.
The bad weather hit the north and central terrace areas of the scenic site between 2 pm and 5 pm on Saturday, the report said.
Emergency management officials and firefighters carried out 131 rescue operations by midnight on Sunday, transferring all stranded hikers to safety. No casualties were reported.
The Mount Wutai Fire and Rescue Brigade said many of those seeking help were university students and inexperienced hikers. Some were lightly dressed and affected by the sudden drop in temperature, while others became exhausted or panicked after misjudging their condition.
A local meteorological official said the mountain's summit area, with its high altitude and steep terrain, is prone to extreme weather, including strong winds, low temperatures and heavy precipitation. The official said the perceived temperature at the summit is often lower than forecast, posing significant safety risks.
The scenic area has set up six warning points at five summit checkpoints and urged visitors not to enter the summit area. Tourists are advised to focus on safer, well-equipped parts of the scenic area, such as Taihuai town.
