British journalist Robert Parker recently visited Dali in Yunnan province and discovered it to be remarkably different from nearly 50 years ago, believing it offers a genuine glimpse into the real China.

Parker's first visit to Dali was in 1977. He described the city at that time as a typical agricultural area without tall buildings, just scattered villages.

Dali has transformed dramatically, yet the iconic Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple still stand tall, and the sunsets over Erhai Lake remain breathtaking, according to Parker.

He described places like Dali as vital windows for the world to gain insight into the true essence of China.

Parker added that for some, China still represents a wild and exotic destination, and he believes that more people from Western countries will be drawn to it over time.
