Guangdong announces thousands of road hazards addressed following landslide
The Department of Emergency Management of Guangdong province recently released a report on the rectification progress following a landslide disaster that occurred in 2024 on the Chayang section of the Meizhou-Dapu Expressway.
According to the report, authorities in Guangdong province have conducted a comprehensive inspection of 223,000 kilometers of road transportation infrastructure across the province and identified 16,069 risk hazards, all of which have been managed within a closed-loop system.
The landslide occurred early on May 1, 2024, killing 52 people and injuring 30 after sending 23 vehicles tumbling and causing widespread devastation, according to authorities. Prolonged heavy rain combined with multiple factors was blamed for the serious expressway landslide disaster.
After the disaster, 11,370 slopes along roads and expressways have been inspected across the province, with 4,252 risk hazards identified and all addressed, the report said.
The repair and reopening project for the Chayang section has been completed, and traffic flow has generally returned to pre-interruption levels since the expressway resumed operation on Sept 10, 2024.
