Recognizing the significance of artificial intelligence in the ongoing global technological transformation, young scientific and technological talents are being called upon to serve as a new driving force for advancing AI-driven scientific innovation and shaping the future of research, according to officials and experts.

To better explore the potential of AI in driving scientific research and to provide guidance for young scientific talents in the latest technological revolution, a seminar on young scientific and technological talents' development and AI's integration with scientific research was held on Tuesday in Shanghai, attended by nearly 100 experts, scholars and young talents in science and technology.

As Shanghai enters the critical stage of developing into a globally influential sci-tech innovation hub, AI serves as a key driving force in this process, said Huang Peng, deputy director of the Administrative Center of Shanghai R&D Public Service Platforms.

"AI for science is reshaping research methodologies across disciplines, including physics, chemistry, life sciences and materials science. The younger generation will serve as the key driving force behind innovative breakthroughs and pioneers of scientific research," said Huang.

Liu Yanjing, Party secretary of the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, said the institute is committed to building a dynamic innovation ecosystem that supports the growth and development of young talents.

"With strong support, younger scientific and technological talents have the potential to achieve innovative results, thereby strengthening Shanghai's foundation for innovation-driven development and enhancing its competitive edge," Liu said.

Yao Xu, secretary-general of the Center for Global AI Innovative Governance and associate researcher at the Fudan Development Institute, provided an in-depth analysis of the United States' "Genesis Mission".

"China should respond proactively at the strategic level, building a collaborative, efficient, and resilient innovation ecosystem, and make targeted arrangements in areas such as optimizing resource supply, strengthening basic support, activating market momentum, innovating research organization models, and establishing an open and inclusive innovation network for the Global South," Yao said.

With a focus on young scientific and technological talents' development and the integration of AI with scientific research, the seminar looks to serve as a platform for young talents to exchange ideas and share their experiences, and further contribute to Shanghai's development into an international technological innovation center with global influence.
