Man who killed 2 toddlers with rat poison executed

NANNING - A man who was responsible in a rat poison case that killed two children and sicked 19 others in South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region in 2009 has been executed, authorities announced on Sunday.

Li Shengguang, 68, was owner of the land where the Muge township Wenda Kindergarten was built. He added poison to a meal intended for Lu Zhikun, a cook at the school with whom Li had a long-term dispute.

But Lu never ate the poisoned meal, and instead 21 children, aged two to five, ate the meals that contained the rodenticide, known as "dushuqiang" in Chinese and widely used in rural areas.

Two toddlers died before reaching the hospital.

Li was sentenced to death on August 25, 2010 by Guigang city Intermediate people's court. He did not appeal the verdict. The decision was recently approved by the Supreme People's Court.
