Washington will hopefully "take substantial actions" to support Beijing and the Manila resume their two-way dialogues, Foreign Minister Wang Yi told US Secretary of State John Kerry.

The US should also support the joint effort by China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in safeguarding regional peace, Wang said when meeting with Kerry in Vientiane, Laos, on Monday.

Kerry delivered support to the joint statement released by China and the ASEAN earlier on Monday and said Washington does not take position over the recent ruling of an arbitration case sought by the Philippines against China.

Washington supports the resumption of dialogue between Beijing and Manila, Kerry added.

On China-US relationship, the Chinese foreign minister said it is inevitable to see their two major countries having some differences, but the common interests between China and the US "are more than ever before".

Kerry said the relationship between China and the US is "without question, one of, if not the most consequential bilateral relationships on the globe".

"And that is because we do cooperate on areas of such importance like Iran, the nuclear agreement, counterterrorism, climate change - where we made a huge difference together," Kerry added.
