Childhood should be a happy and carefree time, but some children never have a chance to enjoy the time. Instead, what they see everyday are death, blood, dirt and disorder and finding food for their next meal is a frequent worry.

From the war in Afghanistan to the Iraq war, to the continuing Syrian crisis and the Ukraine crisis, millions of children are left to suffer in poverty, with family loss and illiteracy. Here we have selected some pictures of refugee children as World Refugee Day is observed on June 20.
