Hundreds flee home after tornado in Indonesian(Xinhua)Updated: 2007-02-19 14:13 JAKARTA - Over 700 people left their homes and took refuge after tornado hit Yogyakarta province in Java island on Sunday, the local National Disaster Agency said in Jakarta on Monday. Over 44 people were injured and more than 1,000 houses were destroyed after strong wind hit Yogyakarta town of the province on Sunday afternoon, an official of the Agency Ana Theresia said. "The tornado hit at 17:15 yesterday, destroyed 1,061 houses and wounded 44 people," she told Xinhua. She said local administration has delivered aid to those affected. "We have provided logistic, generator for electricity and tents, " she said. Tornado is a column of air revolving rapidly and reaching the Earth, which is caused by cumuliform cloud. Indonesia is regularly hit by tornado at the change of session in September and April, according to the country's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency. |
