Moderate quake hits Indonesia(Xinhua)Updated: 2006-12-09 20:45 A 5.3-magnitude earth quake rocked the waters off Aceh province, Indonesia on Saturday, no potential of tsunami and immediate casualty reported, Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said here.
The quake struck at 16:24 local time with epicenter at 31 kilometers under the sea bed and 6 kilometers southeast of Banda Aceh, the capital city of the province in northern tip of Indonesia's Sumatra island, official of the agency Arif Ahir told Xinhua.
Aceh was hit by the December 2004's tsunami that left over 170 000 people dead or missing. The catastrophe devastated coastal areas of the oil-and-gas rich province.
Indonesian is laid on a vulnerable quake-hit zone that called "the Pacific Rim of Fire," where continental plates meet causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
