The players were dumping serves into the net and hitting the shuttlecock wide, apparently deliberately making errors to try and lose their match. And the referee showing them the black card of disqualification didn't appear to have any effect.

Now the Badminton World Federation has thrown the eight players involved out of the Olympics, including the Chinese world doubles champions. Teams from South Korea and Indonesia were also disqualified. Apparently they'd been trying to get themselves better placement in the later rounds of the competition.
