Peng Shuai eyes quaterfinal berth

(Xinhua) Updated: 2012-06-30 09:06

LONDON - China's Peng Shuai said here on Friday that she will try hard to win a quarterfinal berth at Wimbledon after breezing past Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus in the fourth round.

The 30th seed dropped only three games and needed only 47 minutes to eliminate Rus 6-1, 6-2.

"It was a big surprise for me," she said. "I had expected it to be a tough match. I felt very nervous before it started. I think I have played my best tennis."

The world 72nd-ranked Rus, who upset US Open champion and fifth seed Samantha Stosur in the second round, failed to pose any challenge to Peng. She double faulted five times and committed eight unfored errors.

It's the second time for Peng to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon, and fourth in total at Grand Slam events, all in last year. But she has never got past the fourth round.

She was stopped by Maria Sharapova last year here but facing Maria Kirilenko of Russia this time, she is just cautiously confident.

"I am looking forward to this match," she said. "I will have two days off. I will have some training and get myself ready.

"But I will not give myself too much pressure," she said. "I just want to go there and play my best."
