SINGAPORE - Singapore celebrated its first A1 motor racing points at the weekend when the city-state's driver Christian Murchison finished eighth in Beijing.

The three points were earned in only Singapore's third start in the "World Cup of Motorsport".

"This is a huge achievement," A1 Team Singapore media director Anand Vathiyar told the Straits Times.

Singapore is mulling over the possibility of staging a motor race -- possibly on a road circuit. Their entry into A1 motor racing has given the idea greater momentum.

The last time a motor race was held on the island was in 1973 in the old Singapore Grand Prix F2 series. It was scrapped due to an unsafe circuit.

Italy won Sunday's A1 in Beijing, with Britain second and Australia third.

Mexico head the series title race going into the next A1GP round in Sepang, Malaysia, from November 24-26.
