How to play the weighting game

Weight, by the Beijing-based traveling dance company TAO Dance Theater, refers to how dancers use their weight to develop a simple movement and then repeat it over and over again through their bodies. This dance premiere is "the most interesting thing going on in China's modern dance world today," according to its producer, Alison Friedman. Set up in 2008, TAO Dance Theater has already performed in many modern dance festivals throughout China and will be featured as part of the prestigious bi-annual Europalia Festival in Brussels this fall. Tao Ye, choreographer and founder of the innovative young troupe says when the dancers share their experiences with audiences each audience member will respond uniquely to what he sees.
