World Science and Technology Photos 2012

This bioengineered jellyfish is said to be another step towards helping patients with damaged hearts. Pictured here swimming in a pool of salt water, the robotic creature was created using a mixture of silicone and cells taken from rats' hearts. Although it isn't a living organism the "Medusoid" is very similar in muscle formation to that of a real jellyfish - meaning it can swim gracefully. Findings of the study were published by Kevin Kit Parker, bioengineer at Harvard University, in collaboration with a team of researchers at the California Institute of Technology. They hope the Medusoid technology brings them closer to creating new tissue, and eventually whole organs, for patients. "We're trying to become really good at building tissue for medical use, said Kit Parker. "This was a test." [Photo/CFP]
