Learning outside a school environment can consume a lot of mom or dad's time. One partner often foregoes full-time employment in order to home school. This can be a big sacrifice for families struggling to balance their budget. The biggest drawback is a lack of interaction with others. This sheltering effect has the benefit of avoiding child negativity but in the real world these do not always end after high school.
