護苗行動 (humiao xingdong): Protecting juveniles on the Internet

(China Daily) Updated: 2015-06-02 07:40

Prior to International Children's Day, the Cyberspace Administration of China launched a "Protecting Juveniles on the Internet" initiative to prevent teenagers from accessing inappropriate and unhealthy content on the Internet.

According to the China Internet Network Information Center, the number of juvenile Internet users had reached 277 million, accounting for 79.6 percent of the country's juvenile population by 2014. Data from the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center suggested that more than 70 percent of complaining reports it had received involved pornographic contents.

The Cyberspace Administration of China pays great attention to creating a healthy online environment for Chinese juveniles, and focuses on cleaning up unhealthy content such as violence and pornography on the Internet.

The latest initiative to protect juvenile Internet users will concentrate on five key areas, including instant messaging services such as WeChat and QQ, social network platforms such as micro blogs and online forums, information storage platforms such as Yunfile and Netdisk, online videos and micro videos, and mobile applications and platforms.

The Second National Internet Security Promotion Week from Monday to Sunday will also launch a series of activities in order to promote a healthy Internet for the young.
