It really depends, but it's likely that it may come out eventually, and I'm sure you'd prefer that it came from you rather than someone else. Just remember you can leave out a few details if needed and always make them realize why you made a bad decision and why they should learn from you. This may even make them respect you more, because they will know you are talking from experience.
