Triple Gold in 1936 Speed Skating

One of the greatest speed skaters of the early Winter Games, Ivar Ballangrud competed in three Olympics and earned seven medals. At the 1928 St. Moritz Games, Ballangrud won the 5,000m by 8.6 seconds and added a bronze medal in the 1,500m. The 1932 races in Lake Placid were held pack-style, a format with which Ballangrud was unfamiliar. Although he entered three events, his only medal was a silver in the 10,000m. The normal rules were reinstated in 1936. Ballangrud won three gold medals, in the 500, the 5,000 and the 10,000, and took home a silver medal at 1,500m.
