Shanxi Museum was named the "2013 most innovative museum", during activities celebrating the "5.18 International Museum Day", held by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage and Shandong provincial government, in Jinan, capital of Shandong province.

The "5.18 International Museum Day" is an annual event set up in 2012, and the award is approved by the Chinese Museum Association, with only 2 winners each year.

Suzhou Museum is the other winner this year. Shanxi Museum is the province's biggest center of collecting, protecting, studying, and displaying cultural relics, and it becomes increasingly popular with the public because of its unique ways of presenting its exhibits, its management and protective measures, and considerate service. In addition, Shanxi Museum is open to the public free of charge since 2008, and many interactive activities have been held there.
