Pingtan, of South China's Fujian province, has seen a cross-border boom, as it is currently building itself to be both a comprehensive pilot zone and a free trade zone.

According to statistics released by the Pingtan Entry-exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, from Jan to Oct this year Pingtan imported a total of 98 goods shipments worth 39.63 million yuan ($5.8 million) through cross-border e-commerce platforms, an increase of 140 percent compared with the same period last year.

The variety of imported goods has become more diversified. In addition to maternity and baby products, such as baby formula and diapers, other products, including cosmetics, health care products, vintage wines and leisure snacks, have been imported by the city.

Pingtan's quality inspection authority carried out random inspection of the goods purchased through the cross-border e-commerce platforms. The result showed that shipments have seen a significant decrease in rejection rates. However, improperly labeled shipments still exist, which will require relevant companies or purchasers to pay more attention to import specifications.

As of the end of Oct this year, Pingtan's e-commerce revenue has totaled over 120 million yuan since launching its cross-border e-commerce business platform in 2014.
