Jilin province boasts strong scientific and technological advantages and competitiveness in industries -- such as automobiles, railway vehicles, optics, applied chemistry, solid state physics, optoelectronic (aerospace) information technology, biological medicines, new materials, scientific instruments, modern agriculture and modern Chinese medicine -- some of which are on the cutting edge of progress and development in the country.

The province boasts a total of 24 academicians at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. It has 11 national key laboratories, three key laboratories jointly established by the province and the Ministry of Science and Technology, 78 provincial-level key laboratories and 145 provincial-level technological innovation centers.

The science parks of Changchun University of Science and Technology and Northeast Electric Power University are both national-level university science parks.

Jilin also boasts some national key scientific research institutions. These include the Changchun Institute of Optics, the Fine Mechanics and Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

It also has 37 workstations for academicians -- and the Changchun optoelectronics industrial park, built for an investment of 13.83 billion yuan ($1.96 billion).
