Rising director Wuershan has created a Chinese fantasy blockbuster.

His latest film, Painted Skin: The Resurrection, is a 3D sequel to his well-received 2008 love story.

Resurrection deals with the intertwined relationships among a general, the son of the leading couple from the first film, a princess and a fox demon.

The film brings back the stellar cast of the first installment, including Chen Kun, Zhou Xun and Zhao Wei.

Chinese-American singer Fei Xiang, 52, plays a villain described as "Chinese films' answer to Lord Voldemort". His deformed appearance will seriously shock his fans.

Wuershan is known for his bold and flashy visual style, which is displayed in full in his film, The Butcher, the Chef and the Swordsman. The flick was screened in the Midnight Madness section at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival.

Resurrection puts more emphasis on special effects created with computer-generated technology and innovative makeup.

It premiered on June 28.
