本以為這兩個(gè)詞在網(wǎng)球場(chǎng)上的意思都來源于英國，其實(shí)不然，"seed"是一個(gè)地地道道的美國詞。最能證明這個(gè)詞的來源的莫過于《牛津英語詞典》里收錄的1898年American Lawn Tennis雜志（《美國草地網(wǎng)球》雜志）中的一句話： "Several years ago, it was decided to 'seed' the best players through the championship draw in handicap tournaments so that the players in each class shall be separated as far as possible one from another."
"Love"用作"零分"的意思要追溯到17世紀(jì)的短語 "play for love" , 它的意思是"to play without any wager, for nothing" （沒有任何賭注的游戲），從此"love"就有了"nothing"這個(gè)意英語思， 進(jìn)而引申到網(wǎng)球比賽中，一些牌類游戲和英國的足球解說中也沿用了這一說法。在英式英語中，零比零的比賽標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的說法是 "love-all"。
