Major events in Sino-Kyrgyz relations

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao startsa visit to Kyrgyzstan on Tuesday at the invitation of Kyrgyz Prime Minister Nikolai Tanayev. The following are the major events in Sino-Kyrgyz relations:

China and Kyrgyzstan established diplomatic relations on Jan. 5,1992.

On Jan. 5, 2002, Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan exchanged congratulations with their Kyrgyz counterparts, Askar Akayevich Akayev and Muratbek Sansyzbayevich Yimanaliyev, respectively on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-Kyrgyz diplomatic relations.

On June 7, 2002, Jiang held bilateral talks with Akayev while attending a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in St. Petersburg, Russia.

From June 23 to 25, 2002, Akayev paid a working visit to China at the invitation of President Jiang. He met with Jiang and Premier Zhu Rongji respectively.

The two sides signed the Sino-Kyrgyz Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Cooperation, the Agreement on the Exchanges of Citizens between China and Kyrgyzstan, the Agreement on Sino-Kyrgyz Cooperation in the Field of Energy, the Agreement on the Avoidance of Double Taxation Between China and Kyrgyzstan, and the Agreement on Mutually Acknowledging Academic Degrees and Certificates Between China and Kyrgyzstan.

On May 28, 2003, Chinese President Hu Jintao held bilateral talks with Akayev when he was attending the SCO summit in Moscow.

On Sept. 23, 2003, Chinese Premier Wen met with his counterparts of the other four SCO members, including Kyrgyz Prime Minister Nikolai Tanayev, when they were attending the SCO prime ministers' meeting in Beijing.

On June 16, 2004, Chinese President Hu met with Akayev at the Turon State Guest House while the two were in Tashkent for an SCO summit.
