China begins construction of US$497m hydropower project in Hebei
Construction of a hydropower plant with an installed generation capacity of 1.0 million kW started on December 18 in the northern province of Hebei, the Wen Wei Po said. The plant will have a total investment of 4.12 billion yuan (US$497 million), of which the Asian Development Bank lent US$144 million. The first generating unit is expected to begin operations in 2008, and the whole project will be completed by 2009. The plant will become the largest hydropower plant in the province, and will be a reliable power source for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. |
