Six people were killed Sunday afternoon by poisonous gas from a discarded household pickle pool in Zhao'an County of east China's Fujian Province, said local police source.

At around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, farmer Zhang Youwen in Xiaguan Village of Guanpi Town and his three sons fell into coma one after another when they were cleaning their discarded picle pool.

Neighbors and other villagers rushed immediately to the scene to offer help after they heard cries for help.

The poisonous gas killed 6 people, including the father and histhree sons as well as two neighbors of Zhang, who were the first to rush to the spot.

In addition, about 16 people among the rescuers were poisoned to different degrees by the toxic gas from the pool, which was determined by experts to be hydrogen cyanide.

The pool was used by the Zhangs to pickle green plums but was abandoned six years ago.

The government of Zhao'an County has ordered that all discarded pickle pools in the county be put under strict control to prevent similar accidents.
