Domestic productions have provided audiences with many pleasant surprises on the silver screen this year. As the year is coming to an end, China Daily Website has invited nine critics, academics and film workers to vote for their top ten films of the year.

Su Qiqi: The success of Monster Hunt lies not only in its visual achievements. There are two major reversals in this film. First, the relationship between man and woman is reversed, with a sissy male protagonist and a masculine female. Second, the relationship between monsters and humans is turned around. Men are not necessarily good, and monsters aren't always so bad. With these reversals, the film challenges the values of human kind.

Bian Xiaojing: The numerous records set by this film are without a doubt the major targets for Chinese filmmakers to break in the next few years.

In brief: The fantasy film released on July 16 tells the story of a man's fight to protect his baby son, a monster named Huba, from being hurt by both humans and monsters. Starring Bai Baihe, Jing Boran, Wu Jiang, the movie was directed by Raman Hui.
