Former professor Lu Yanshi attempts but fails to reach his wife as he is transferred from one labor camp to another in the early '80s. He returns home after three years only to find his wife, Chen Wanyu, has amnesia. His return and criminal record put a lot of pressure on Lu Dandan, his daughter, who dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer. Dandan tried everything to prevent him from meeting his wife. The couple was so close in distance, yet so far apart.
