Zhang Hui and his uncle Zhang Gaoping, two men wrongly convicted in a rape case, were invited to visit the Supreme People's Court and meet Zhou Qiang, its head, on Dec 4, the first Constitution Day of China, reported thepaper.cn.

The invitation was part of the activities held nationwide to commemorate the first Constitution Day of China.

In 2003, Zhang Hui and his uncle Zhang Gaoping were put on trial for raping a 17-year-old girl. Despite the lack of physical evidence, the?nephew and uncle were sentenced to life?imprisonment and 15 years?in prison respectively.

They were acquitted ten years later thanks to Zhang Biao, a prosecutor in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region where the two were jailed, who spent five years correcting the verdict that convicted the two men.

Earlier this year, in the report made at the annual "two sessions" – the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Zhou Qiang urged the judicial system "to learn lessons from the case of Zhang Hui and Zhang Gaoping, and prevent the miscarriage of justice by paying more attention to material evidence in law enforcement."
