Some Tianjin food fails to meet labeling standards

(chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2013-01-14 21:48

Some food in Tianjin has failed to meet new labeling standards that require manufacturers to list nutritional facts on packaging, a website has reported.

Some supermarkets in Binhai New Area in Tianjin are still selling food wrapped up in substandard packets, enorth.com reported.

A new regulation stipulates that the content of core nutrients — protein, fat, carbohydrate and sodium — and their percentage in nutrient reference value, which is the daily amount of nutrients required for good health, should be on the label.

It also emphasizes that the usage of trans fat, which, if consumed, can increase the risk of coronary disease, be clarified on labels.

But the report said many food manufacturers have failed to meet the new requirements. Packaged food in some supermarkets in Binhai did not specify the percentage of protein and fat on its packaging, and some did not mention whether the food contained trans fat.

The local consumer association suggested that customers call the hotline 12315 for refunds or complaints.
