Ex-official sentenced to death with 2-year reprieve

GUIYANG - A former government official in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve Wednesday after being convicted of corruption.

Fan Zhongqian, former mayoral assistant of Guiyang, was convicted Wednesday at the Intermediate People's Court in Guiyang City of accepting bribes and failing to account for his cash and assets.

The sentence included the confiscation of all Fan's personal property and the lifetime deprivation of his political rights.

The verdict was approved by the Higher People's Court of Guizhou province.

The Guiyang Intermediate People's Court issued a verdict in the first trial on July 29, saying Fan took bribes totaling more than 10 million yuan ($1.47 million) and had an additional 2.46 million yuan, $250,000, 120,000 Euros, and HK$360,000, received from unidentified sources when he was in office from 1988 to 2008.

Fan had planned to appeal the ruling verbally, though he later submitted a written document withdrawing his appeal.
