17.8% of lottery sales used to fund social security in '08

Sales of lottery tickets reached 106.01 billion yuan ($15.52 billion) in China in 2008, generating 33.60 billion yuan for public welfare funds, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement on its website Thursday.

A total of 18.87 billion yuan of the public welfare funds was allocated as social security funds, accounting for 53.18 percent of the welfare money, or 17.8 percent of the sales revenue.
