TOKYO -- Chinese President Hu Jintao made a five-point proposal on furthering the China-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations during a speech at the Waseda University Thursday afternoon.

"We reached broad consensus on the deepening of the strategic and mutually benefical relations between China and Japan in an all-round way and worked out a framework for the long-term stable and healthy development of the bilateral ties" during talks with Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on Wednesday, Hu said.

First, he said, the two countries should strive to boost mutual strategic trust, which is fundamental for stable relations among countries.

Efforts should also be made to deepen the mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Japan and expand their cultural exchanges.

He also expounded on the need for more coordination and cooperation between the two countries for a prosperous Asia and in facing up to world challenges.

Hu started a five-day state visit to Japan on Tuesday, the first visit by a Chinese head of state to the country in a decade.
