Li was convicted of taking bribes of 5.62 million yuan (US$760,000) from seven institutions and a company executive between 1996 and 2006, when he served as deputy head of the Tianjin Municipal Public Security Bureau and chief procurator of Tianjin Municipal People's Procuratorate, according to the Cangzhou Intermediate People's Court in Hebei Province.

Li took the bribes to seek illegal benefits for others, the court heard on Wednesday.

He was also found guilty of misappropriating 14 million yuan from a service center of the Tianjin Municipal People's Procuratorate from March 2003 to November 2004, according to the court.

The embezzled funds were returned before Li was investigated.
