Red tide in Hong Kong waters dissipates

The recent red tide in Hong Kong waters has fully dissipated with no fish kills reported, the red tide monitoring team of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) announced on Friday.

The red tide was first reported at Ma Wan on May 31, and it spread to some beaches and fish culture zones in Hong Kong waters. Several reports were received from June 9 to June 11 at Shek O, Turtle Cove, Stanley Bay (Tai Tam Bay) and Big Wave Bay.

The recent red tide was formed by the Cochlodinium sp algae, which is rare in Hong Kong and non-toxic.

The phytoplankton monitoring program of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department of the HKSAR government will continue monitor red tide occurrences to minimize the impact on the mariculture industry and the public.
