BEIJING - China's media and publishing groups have been urged to compete globally by reforming their operations and promoting their products overseas.

At a meeting on Saturday, Jiang Jianguo, deputy director of the General Administration of Press and Publication said, "While securing their places in the domestic market, news media and publishing groups should positively participate in global competition by setting up branches and publications overseas through share-buying and other methods."

According to Jiang, the administration will help the country's leading publishing groups enter the global market while supporting key publications from renowned writers and groups in a bid to expand the influence of Chinese culture.

Jiang urged media and publishing companies to attract readership by targeting specific groups with different publications.

Jiang stressed reforming operations, highlighting transformation of publicly-funded organizations, such as state-owned performing arts troupes and publishing houses, into enterprises that assume sole responsibility for their profits or losses.
