China March power consumption up 13.4%

BEIJING?- China's overall power consumption in March rose 13.41 percent from a year earlier, extending the solid growth in past two months as pent-up demand emerged after a power crackdown in late last year.

The National Energy Administration said on Thursday that electricity consumption totaled 388.8 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) last month, or 12.54 billion kWh per day.

Electricity consumption in the first three months increased 12.72 percent from a year earlier to 1,091.1 billion kWh, the administration said.

Electricity consumption by secondary industries grew 12.31 percent year on year and 15.5 percent in the tertiary sector in the first three months.

Chinese provinces curbed power consumption and generation late last year as local governments made a last-minute effort to achieve pre-set energy intensity goals.

Power consumption increased only 5.4 percent from a year earlier in both November and December.
