The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index on the Shanghai Stock Exchange inched up 1.23 percent, or 38.32 points, to end at 3,147.42 points. The Shenzhen Component Index on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange closed at 12,686.06 points, up 191.71 points, or 1.53 percent.

Combined turnover was 277.60 billion yuan ($40.64 billion), up from 219.76 billion yuan on the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers by 803 to 75 in Shanghai and 786 to 113 in Shenzhen.
