Trade unions have been established in some 111,000 joint ventures in China involving foreign or Taiwan Province, Hong Kong and Macao investment, accounting for 73.1 percent of the businesses, a senior union official said in Beijing on Friday.

The fact that a large number of transnationals such as Wal-Mart have formed union organizations serves as encouragement to other overseas investors, said Zhang Mingqi, deputy president of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, at a press conference.

Breakthrough has also been made in union building in private businesses, with a total members of 52.21 million, he told Chinese and foreign reporters covering the annual session of China's parliament.

Zhang disclosed that 61.97 million migrant workers have joined trade unions, accounting for 51 percent of the total number of the migrant workers across the country.

China now has about 1.51 million union organizations in 3.19 million businesses and the number of members has reached 193 million, accounting for 71.5 percent of the employees, said the official.
