China's advertising sales jumped 11.1 percent year-on-year in 2006 as more companies seek to expand their business in the world's fastest-growing major economy.

Analysts also attributed the robust sales growth to higher advertising spending by the major sponsors of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Advertising sales climbed by 15.67 billion yuan to hit 157.3 billion yuan (US$20.5 billion) last year, according to the 2007 China Advertising Industry Development Forum held in the eastern city of Nanjing.

The number of the advertising firms totaled 143,129 in 2006, 14.1 percent more than in the previous year.

According to the forum, advertising sales for TV, radio, newspapers, and magazines surged 18.2 percent from 2005 to 79.79 billion yuan last year.

Sales of advertising agencies rose 2.6 percent year-on-year to 63.13 billion yuan.

The real estate sector topped the list of big spenders forking out 16 billion yuan. It was followed by the medical, food, cosmetics, and auto industries.

Advertising sales in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangdong, the biggest regional economies in China, accounted for 48.8 percent of national total.
