Energy consumption per unit GDP down 1.23% in 2006

China's energy consumption per 10,000 yuan (1,292 U.S. dollars) of GDP fell 1.23 percent to 1.21 tons of coal equivalent in 2006, failing to meet the projected target, show official figures released Wednesday.

China's unit GDP energy consumption up 0.8% in H1

This is the first time the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released figures on China's energy consumption per unit GDP. The Chinese government set an annual goal of reducing energy consumption per unit GDP by 4 percent in 2006.

According to preliminary estimates of the NBS, China consumed a total of 2.46 billion tons of coal equivalent in 2006, up 9.3 percent from a year earlier.
