French retail giant Carrefour will open its first environmentally friendly supermarket in China as part of its plan to expand in the world's most-populous nation, a company executive said.

The "ecological supermarket" will be built in Beijing and will use 30 percent less water and electricity than other Carrefour stores, said Jose Luis Duran, chairman of Carrefour's management board.

Recyclable bags and special electric trams will also be part of the store's plan, he told reporters.
