The Ziquejie Terraces were first cultivated by local farmers over 2,000 years ago and expanded during the Song (960-1279) and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties. One of the most remarkable features of these terraces is their natural irrigation system, which has sustained rice farming for millennia without the need for reservoirs or man-made ponds.
