Historic overseas Chinese remittance letters showcased in Shanghai

"My father spent his entire life as a laborer in the mines. All the hardships endured by our older generation are preserved in these qiaopi letters."
Zhang Yuzhu, who returned from Indonesia at age 13 in 1960, remembered the community spirit among overseas Chinese. "Whenever someone was returning to their hometown, neighbors would pool money to send back to their ancestral villages. We supported not only our own elderly parents but also helped fellow villagers. This sense of loyalty and righteousness was ingrained in our bones."
The exhibition also highlights how overseas Chinese, despite their own hardships, contributed significantly to China's development.
